Rose Agnes Rolls 1940
Rose Agnes Rolls Cousins of Fairmont, WV graduated from West Virginia State College in 1940. she was the first African-American woman to become a solo pilot in the Civilian Pilot Training program.

Water Tower ca. 1970
The West Virginia State University Water Tower was originially erected in 1897. The tower was originally a wooden structure and part of the functioning water system for the campus. Over time a more modern water tower was required and the current, steel tower was constructed. The water tower has undergone renovations, debates centering around its permanent removal, and multiple paint schemes, yet it still stands today. Although the water tower is no longer functional, it has withstood the test of time and has remained one of the most beloved landmarks at WVSU. The image accompanying this description is circa 1970s.

First Football Team 1901
The first football team was organized in 1900 by J.C. Gilmer and coached by Harry Anderson. Known as the "Yellow Jackets," the team began play in 1901.

WVCI School Garden 1915
House Bill Number 329, a bill to change the name and establish a college course, confer degrees, and do extension work in the West Virginia Colored Institute passed the legislature in 1891 (Withrow, 28-29). The 1915 image of the WVCI School Garden provides a snapshot of extension work through the means of agriculture. Thus, confirming the educational opportunities agriculture provided the students at WVCI.
